Many women get acne during pregnancy. Along with other tensions during pregnancy acne adds to them. What causes acne during pregnancy in an adult woman? Let us find out.
Why acne forms-
Acne forms near the opening of the sebaceous glands that have hair follicle in them. The cells that form the wall of the gland exfoliate from the pore opening. In normal circumstances the pore remains open. Sometimes, these cells become dysfunctional and instead of exfoliating normally, block the pore opening. This block stops the sebum going out on the skin.
Excess sebum -
Along with the block, because of changes in the body excess sebum is produced by the sebaceous glands. As the opening is blocked this sebum gets filled in the sebaceous follicle and forms acne.
A bacterium called Proprionobacterium acnes (P. acnes) thrive in the atmosphere that is full of sebum and no air. This bacterium infects the gland. At this stage when the bacteria are flourishing and causing inflammation, the gland is producing more sebum and the pore is blocked, the gland becomes very infective and full of dead cells, bacteria, pus and dead skin. This is what we call as a pimple. When a pimple gets much bigger, it is called a cyst.
During pregnancy, the hormones in the body undergo changes. That may cause acne during the early pregnancy. In later period acne often clears. The changes in hormones cause excess sebum and also blockage of the pore opening. it is all because of hormones that go rapid changes during pregnancy.
