Online dating can be fun and exciting, and it can be easy to get caught up in the pleasure of meeting someone new. Making the transition from chatting online to actually meeting in person does require some common sense and caution, however. In order to get the most of the transition from online to real life, here are some tips that will help.

Wait To meet Until It Feels Right

you should never feel coerced to meet in person, and you should do so only when it feels as if its the right thing to do. Trust your instincts, and wait until you feel comfortable. When you date online, you don't ever have to date offline if you do not prefer to.

Drive Yourself to the Date Location

Drive yourself to and from the location of the first date. When you let your date to drive you around, you can lose control of the situation. In addition, if he/she picks you up from home, he/she will know where you live. If you don't drive, ask a friend to drive you, take a taxi or take public transportation. If during the course of the date, the two of you agree to switch locations, take your car to the new location. If you don't drive, then you should plan to stay at the original location.

Let Someone Know Where You Will Be

This is for your protection, not to make you feel like you aren't' an adult. Tell a close friend, coworker, or other person the name of the person you are meeting, that person's contact information, the place you're planning to meet, and the approximate time you expect to return home. That way, if things go bad, someone will know to contact authorities and what to tell them.

Carry Your Cell Phone

Make sure the battery is charged and have it ready with you to use. While you may not want to have it on and disrupt your date, it should be readily accessible to you.

Limit Alcohol

Drinking excessively is not a good idea on a first date, because it can impair your judgment. You'll have plenty of other opportunities to indulge if you like, and its a good idea to wait until another time. Besides, you want to make a good first impression.

Use Your Judgment

While you're on your date, tune in to your instincts. They'll know if the date isn't going right, so pay attention. If you need another opinion, excuse yourself, and call someone you trust and with whom you can discuss your feelings. Contact the authorities if you think it is appropriate. You can feel like a fool later on, but that's a lot better than possibly becoming a statistic.

By following these guidelines, your dating experience will be a safe one, and help you keep an upbeat perspective about online dating. While you may or may not want to have a second date, having a standardized first date protocol will help you feel in control and able to enjoy the first date.
