Typically the people invited to the rehearsal dinner includes immediate family members of both the bride and groom, the bridesmaids, maid of honor, best man, and probably any out of town guests who have traveled to be at the wedding. These guests do not have to be at the actual rehearsal. They can be invited to the dinner afterwards. The wedding rehearsal is usually planned for anywhere from a few days before the big event to the night before. Some brides like to schedule this for at least two nights before so they are not entertaining the night before their wedding.

Depending on whether your wedding is going to be a casual or formal the rehearsal dinner can be the opposite. A barbecue is fine for an after the rehearsal get together if you prefer just a casual come as you are relaxing time before the wedding. Some couples opt for this idea so family and friends can get together and just enjoy themselves before the big day. This is great for family that may have come from out of town or out of state to be at the wedding. It gives them a chance to catch up with family members who they may not have seen for a while. It also is a more casual atmosphere for the bride and groom's family members to get more acquainted.

Another great idea for a casual dinner is a pizza party. This can be at your local pizza parlor or it can be at the home of the soon to be in-laws and have delivery. This type of atmosphere allows more mingling among the two families and lets them get to know each other without all the stiffness of a formal dinner. After all they will have a common link now and will be seeing more of each other.

Some couples decide on a formal dinner at an exclusive restaurant for their rehearsal dinner. This dinner is considered a treat for those who will be participating in your wedding and the couples way of saying thank you for taking part in their special day. This is also the perfect time for the bride and groom to give their wedding party small gifts as another token of their appreciation. The formal dinner is usually chosen if the wedding isn't going to be extremely formal. A separation of the two events is what is aimed for.

The rehearsal is important and hopefully ensures that the wedding will go off without a hitch. However the rehearsal dinner is just as important for showing appreciation and letting your family, soon to be family, and friends how much their participation in your big day means to the both of you.
