Many people are uncomfortable or experience some degree of anxiousness when pushed into a new situation or a large group of unfamiliar people. However, for roughly ten percent of people, anxiety about social situations can be so severe as to be disabling. Scientists now believe that a much larger group of people probably deal with milder types of social anxieties that can cause significant issues in everyday social interactions.

The term for this type of anxiety is social phobia. It often occurs when one has fears or worries that often arise from being in a social event. One who struggles with a social phobia might also struggle to deal with forcing themselves to stop thinking too much about how others are judging or evaluating them.

For people who have social phobia, anxious feelings can take place in all sorts of different types of situations, including going to the store, parties, public speaking, standing in front of a group of people, or being interviewed. These social anxieties can also make themselves visible in the body; for many people with social anxiety, sweating, blushing, shaking hands, or stomach issues can take place when dealing with these types of high-stress situations.

Scientists now believe that social phobia consists of issues with self confidence. Self-confidence is our ability to feel that we are capable of making good decisions, be independent, and take power over our lives. People who struggle with self confidence -- an all-too common problem in today's high-stress world -- might think too much about how others perceive them, eventually leading to not wanting to participate in social events or of having a sense of feeling a loss of control.

Fortunately, though, there are some basic actions someone with self confidence issues can undertake to regain this sense of control. One possible action a person who struggles with self confidence issues can undertake is to make use of an anxiety and phobia workbook. You can think of the anxiety and phobia workbook as a simple means to get insight into the issues you are having trouble with by keeping a journal of triggers and mood-related symptoms; the anxiety and phobia workbook also contains activities to do that will help you build better introspection about your self confidence issues.

When you have come to the point at which you have begun to have some insight about your issues with self confidence, and have decided that it is now time to begin developing self confidence, then it might make sense to investigate a type of therapy that has been demonstrated to be immensely successful in social phobia. Just like the anxiety and phobia workbook, this specific type of therapy is defined by being focused on assisting you to become pro-active and gain control over your life. In sum, you will be curing your own problems.

This form of therapy, called hypnotherapy, works by taking control of the hidden powers of your unconscious mind to help you become more confident, self-assured, relaxed, and comfortable with yourself. You may have a hard time believing that we all come into this world with these abilities, but because of difficult life events, learned disempowerment, and difficult social interactions, it is common to lose track of our inborn abilities to take control of these powers. Hypnosis therapy is scientifically shown to work for people who have self confidence and anxiety issues.

Many people who have self confidence and other anxiety related issues often seek out a "quick fix" solution, such as pharmaceuticals, natural products, and short-term therapy. While these are strategies that can help some people, they don't really attack the cause of our self confidence issues - our unconscious mind. To deal with self confidence issues, you must be in charge of your own recovery.

If you make the decision to investigate hypnotherapy to help you gain self confidence, you will receive a course of sessions with a hypnotherapist who will help you to enter a deep state of relaxation. Within this state of calmness, your unconscious mind is open and willing to be reached by suggestive techniques. Your hypnotherapist will then work with you while you are in this open state to use repeated suggestion to help you to realize that you are an able, strong, and independent person.

Some other possibilities for people who struggle to deal with self confidence are to receive hypnosis therapy through videos or audio CDs, which can be watched or listened to in the comfortable space of your own home. Many people also find out that learning self-hypnosis, a special relaxation technique in which you can become open to your deepest wants and needs, with just minimal assistance, is very helpful. Whichever type of hypnosis for anxiety you decide upon, you will be certain that you are undertaking a crucial step in enacting your own healing and recovery.
