One of the problems with being single, especially if you have friends who are settled in a steady relationship, is that everyone seems to be trying to fix you up with a person they think will be perfect for you - frequently a blind date with someone you've never heard of let alone met! It quickly becomes a habit that the only dates you go on are those which are fixed up by well-meaning friends and family members who don't really know what the "real" you is looking for in your ideal mate. If this sounds like your situation then it's time to take a step back from your current dating pattern and assess what it is you really want to achieve from the time you spend on a date.

Take control of your dating life by first of all thinking about what is you want from a date. Are you looking for serious commitment with someone you want to consider as a permanent partner, or are you just looking for short-term fun with someone you can enjoy a social experience with and who isn't expecting anything else from you? Knowing what you want will help you to narrow down your potential dating field because you'll be only looking to date people who have similar relationship goals in mind.

Another part of knowing what you want from a date is to know the kind of personality (and physical attributes) that you are seeking in a potential partner. Even if you are only looking for a social contact you can relax with, you need to know what kind of interests you want them to have - usually ones that match your own so that they form the bases of your dates.

Once you have identify what you want to achieve from your dating, and you have some idea of the kind of person you'd like to date, then you have to know where to find them. This is increasingly becoming easier, especially with the Internet breaking down social and geographical barriers. It could be that you are happy to cyber date only, especially if your current lifestyle doesn't permit much time to get out and about. On the other hand, there are many people on the Internet who are looking to meet people in real life and only use the Internet as a way to find people with similar interests to their own.

Another way of finding the right kind of date is to join groups or associations that follow your interests. This way you'll network with a ready-made social group of people who share what you're passionate about.

Dating is supposed to be fun. It's not supposed to be something that you do in order to make your sister happy, or your best friend comfortable by making up a foursome with her boyfriend's best friend. Take control of your dating life, make your own rules and you'll find that you have more success in finding dates with people who are looking for the same kind of experience as you want.
