If you are marooned on an island with Indian food you can be sure you'll not just survive, but you'll thrive- on biryani and parathas (pan fried, stuffed bread) and various other kinds of Indian food. Indian cuisine is exotic with an exciting range of flavors and culinary styles offering the uninitiated an endless gastronomic adventure.

Food enthusiasts all the over the world, admire the aroma and unforgettable taste of Indian food. What also makes Indian food so special is the fact that there are myriad items to choose from. Owing to its rich culture and spread, it caters to every kind of taste bud ranging from the rotis to the curries to the non-vegetarian delicacies. Every state in India has its own special delicacy to offer. It can range from the dosas in the south to the chaats in the north, the special fish curry in the east to the dhoklas in the west. One thing that remains constant though with each of the food items is that they leave you craving for more.

Contrary to popular perception, Indian food need not be extremely hot. Various spice blends are used in Indian cuisine to give a robust flavor to food. Yoghurt almost always accompanies a meal at the end to cool down the taste buds. Milder on the taste buds are dishes such as kurma (mild meat curry) and tandoori chicken (chicken baked in clay oven).

Generally South Indian cuisine is hotter than its Northern Indian and Mogul counterparts and is characterized by the heavy use of cream, meat based dishes and naan breads. Mogul food is basically the food prepared for the kings and the various dynasties that existed in India

Indian spicy dishes are star attractions for curry aficionados. Putting together an Indian curry is quite a theatrical affair, best appreciated when ingredients are showered into a pan and flash fried over a fierce heat. One can expect robust garlicky notes, plenty of onions and a sprinkling of tingling chillies-perfect for mopping up with any sort of naan (Indian Breads). Also popular is the kadhai or karahi, the Indian wok and this is the Indian answer to a stir-fry. These dishes are by far the easiest, tastiest and most colorful of all Indian varieties.

Not long ago, Indian food aroused incredulity and skepticism abroad. It was widely believed that Indian food must be devoured only in the tropical climate of India as having it anywhere else may lead to stomach upsets. Fast forward to the present, and the scenario appears to have changed completely. India food is definitely the new mantra everywhere from small towns to big cities all over the world.

David Beckham used to celebrate scoring a goal with a curry at his favorite Indian restaurant. More than any other ethnic food, the British have made Indian curry their own it is considered an integral part of British Culture. There is a lot of global diversity in Indian cooking.
