If you're reading this article, chances are you're an aspiring internet entrepreneur. We've all had, at one time or another, aspirations of starting our own online business. I was like most of you, searching desperately for a way of making money online.

In my pursuit of information, I heard and read all the exaggerated claims you can possibly imagine. The truth of the matter is, there are many legitimate ways you can make money on the Internet, but getting started is often harder then what the internet gurus are saying. The easiest way to get your feet wet in the world of e-commerce is by starting your very own affiliate marketing business.

In this increasingly popular method of online business, a vendor rewards his affiliate (or associate) with commissions for every visitor, customer or subscriber. The most interesting aspect of affiliate marketing, from the affiliate's point of view, is that you do not need to sell any products to earn money. You simply need to join an affiliate program and choose a product to promote that best suits the overall theme of your website.

There are countless affiliate programs you can join for free, but the hard part is choosing the one that is right for you. A good idea is to promote informational products, such as informational e-books or software. Because these products are digital, these affiliate programs tend to offer relatively high commissions. ClickBank is probably the world's premier affiliate program for these types of products. Of course you also have to keep in mind that, even though you might get a high commission, this product might not appeal to your website's viewers. What good is a high commission if you can't successfully redirect your reader to the vendor's website?

Ultimately, you must promote a product that you feel comfortable with. If you created a website about skiing because you're passionate about the sport, well I wouldn't suggest you promote an e-book about the stock market. It is also a good idea to buy the product in question before you promote it. This isn't set in stone and can be quite difficult if you plan on promoting more than one product, but this will definitely give you a better perspective on what you're promoting.

Now, I won't lie to all of you, choosing a product to promote for your website is the easy part, actually getting people to your website and buying something is a different story. Chances are you wouldn't even know where to start. To make matters even worse, there are now countless of websites and books that have been created with the sole purpose of scamming you. Fortunately, I'm here to tell you there still exist a few good sources of information regarding online home businesses such as affiliate marketing. The best one I have come across is The Rich Jerk e-book. For the purposes of this article, I've only highlighted the key elements of affiliate marketing, but this e-book will delve into the subjects I alluded to in more detail and also explain many more aspects of this form of online business.
