When students go away to college, parents do everything they can to help them prepare in the best way they can. There is advice passed down regarding just about everything, from relationships to time management to job searching and more yet it seems that so many parents fail to warn their college students about the dangers of student credit cards.

Credit card companies love the college market; it is filled with students doing everything they can to get a little extra cash and play the role of adult in life, and freshman are the most vulnerable. Companies set up booths at college events and book stores with all types of freebies, attempting to sway those newbies into filling out their credit card applications.

Most of the time, the freebies work and students fill out the credit card applications, even if just for the item but what they fail to realize is that every application they fill out puts an inquiry on their credit, meaning that the more student credit card applications a student fills out the less of a chance they actually have of getting one.

It seems that students fail to realize that having a student credit card is not having a line of cash to blow; credit cards are a loan given by the company and the creditor and the student enter into a mutual contact agreement, assuring the creditor that they will be prompt with their bills in exchange for the line of credit. It is all too easy for students to blow their credit cards off at the mall, the bookstore, or on the Internet forgetting that at the end of the month a payment comes due.

Luckily, there are some ways of avoiding the issues that student credit cards can bring. For example, those who would like to apply for a student credit card should definitely limit the number of applications they fill out. Read the applications carefully and make sure that you are okay with the terms the credit card company has set forth. Make sure to read all about the interest rates and the annual fees and find out which offers are the most feasible.

Also, credit cards are not a way of keeping up with bills. Keep in mind that things that are not affordable for you are just that, not affordable for you.

One of the mistakes that many credit card holders make is using the card every chance they get. At least at first, try to use the card as sparingly as possible and only when necessary.

You need to keep up with the bills. Credit card companies make a lot of their money off of late bill payments, and if you consistently fall behind in payments it will make the bill even less affordable than it already is.

Student credit cards are a great way to build credit and are wonderful to have on hand during times of need. Unfortunately, it is easy to get into trouble with student credit cards so make sure that you are aware of and ready for the responsibility before it comes to that.
