Often credit card companies are silent on the hidden charges that credit cards accrue while consumers use them. Most credit card consumers are unaware of the fine print that goes along with owning a credit card. Therefore, consumers are usually unaware of the intricacies involved in credit card payments and know nothing more than the fact that credit cards can be used to purchase goods on credit.

Credit card companies often levy a range of fees and charges for credit cards. As a consumer, one has to be aware of the fact that companies charge differently while consumers use their cards in different ways. Therefore, the interest rate that gets charged when one buys a product, and when one withdraws cash is different. It is good to be aware of the various charges that companies levy in order to use the credit card effectively.

One of the most important points to be careful of is not to carry forward substantial balances each month. This is because as one carries forward balances each month, the interest that accrues on the amount carried forward can reach significant proportions. Since the rate of interest that is charged on credit cards are higher than the interest that is charged on personal loans, it is even better to avail a loan and clear off the debt rather than carrying forward the balance. Paying the balance in full gives consumers about 50-60 days of interest-free credit. This is called the grace period

The downside of delaying balance payments is that consumers may have to pay interest on subsequent purchases made after the initial grace period thereby foregoing the benefit of a grace period on subsequent purchases.
