To be a mother is in itself a matter of great pride. At the same time it is not an easy task. One has to mentally prepare for a lot of changes in her life; she has to be prepared for a very loving and sweet responsibility, the responsibility of bringing a new human being on to this earth. Her responsibility does not end here. She has to give so much of love and comfort to the little one that it grows up to be another responsible human being.

Once she conceives, her activities and habits changed according to the demand of the new life developing with in her. Many of her activities are restricted.

She looks after seed and provides it all the necessary care for almost nine months till it changes in to a seedling ready to come in to this big world. In other worlds she has a tiny tot in her lap. When this new mother gets the first glimpse of her child, she has a very special feeling. It is a feeling that can not be expressed in words. Initially the child feels that the mother is its total world and the mother also devotes her days and nights only to this delicate little one. She is alert at every cry and movement of the new born. The child takes almost a month's time to adjust in the surroundings and other members of the family.

This does not mean that the mother can leave the kid on its own. She keeps an eye on all the activities of the baby and takes full care of him. The little one spends most of the time with his mother. She is the first and the chief teacher of the kid. He learns from every activity of the mother.

The first thing that the tiny tot learns is to smile in response. Isn't it funny and interesting! But it is true. Most of the time it is the mother who handles the baby. If she handles with a loving smile, the child will smile in response. The mother should talk to the child while he is handling it for example changing dippers; bathing him etc. this develops an interaction between the little one and its mother, the child starts responding with a smile.

When talking to the very little one parent should use clear words and complete sentences. Do not use "mum" or "mum-mum" instead of water; let the baby recognize the right thing by the right word. At a later stage it is difficult to make him change the word he is using.

When the mother is making the baby put on his clothes along with talking to him she can say "mummy is making you wear your shirt, papa is waiting for you, go to your papa now". What I mean is let the little one know that you are Mummy and papa and that he should call you mummy and papa, not by your names. Often it is observed that when a child is too small and he calls his parents by their names, every one enjoys this activity.
When he grows older and continues to call them by their names, parents scold him and some times even beat him for this. They do not realize that it is their fault, not his.
These are some of the very small things which not only the mother but the father should also take care of, so that they can bring up the infant as a jolly natured child.
